Sheep lack common sense intelligence, they constantly get are getting into trouble by eating the wrong things, go the wrong direction, and unknowingly endanger their own lives for which they are unable to protect or defend themselves.
Sheep need a shepherd.
Throughout the Bible, God compares mankind to sheep: careless, helpless, and easily go astray. Yet, like the sheep to the shepherd, mankind is precious to a loving God.
The picture of the shepherd is given for leaders and religious leaders. The “Shepherds of people of the day were to busy looking out for themselves and their own interests as opposed to looking out for and caring for the sheep.
God promises to care for the ”the sheep”: He will search for them, rescue them, and provide for them. He also sends Jesus to be the “Good Shepherd“ as described in in John 10, personally leading his “sheep”, feeding the ”sheep” and protecting them, even sacrificing his own life for the “Sheep.”
In this verse we see the wonderful promise that God, himself will take care of the sheep. It is a wonderful promise and a wonderful reminder of God’s faithful goodness to mankind, even when we do not deserve His love.
